Fairweather Lodge Program: Community Living and Vocational Rehabilitation

The Fairweather Lodge program at Lincoln Behavioral Services is an innovative psychosocial rehabilitation model designed for adults managing chronic mental illness. Based on Dr. George Fairweather’s foundational principles, this program empowers individuals who have experienced repeated psychiatric hospitalizations to build meaningful, structured lives. Participants live together in a shared community setting and collaboratively operate a small business to foster both social autonomy and financial independence.

A Supportive, Semi-Independent Living Environment

Maintaining household stability is a core focus of our rehabilitation approach. We currently operate two specialized lodges in the Dearborn area, including Wellesley Lodge (all-female) and Bingham Lodge (all-male). Each home accommodates up to six members and is strategically located near public transit, grocery stores, pharmacies, and banks.

  • Shared Household Responsibilities: Members collaboratively handle daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, exterior maintenance, and household budgeting.
  • Accessible Staff Support: Our dedicated clinical staff is on-site Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with on-call support available during evenings and weekends.
  • Structured Autonomy: The lodge setting provides necessary boundaries and guidance while actively encouraging increasing levels of personal independence.

Vocational Training and Meaningful Employment

A unique and critical component of the Fairweather Lodge is the integrated work program. Lodge members proudly own and operate Fantastic Janitorial, Inc., a commercial cleaning company contracting with local businesses.

This hands-on experience develops practical job skills and builds professional confidence in a highly supportive environment.

  • Team-Based Operations: Members travel to sites in structured crews of four to six people, working alongside job coaches and peer crew chiefs.
  • Diverse Career Opportunities: Roles range from cleaning crew members and van drivers to administrative committee members responsible for managing payroll, taxes, and supply acquisition.
  • Financial Independence: Participants work part-time schedules and earn a regular paycheck, helping them cover their comprehensive monthly lodging costs.

Achieving Long-Term Independence

The ultimate goal of the Fairweather Lodge program is to equip consumers with the life skills and work experience needed to transition into fully independent living. By combining secure housing with sustainable employment, we help our members break the cycle of hospitalization and become active, thriving participants in the local workforce.
